When learning a foreign language the priority of most people is to know the grammar flawlessly and crown it with a sufficient level of vocabulary thereafter. Even though grammar forms the building block in this process, it is also important to learn the words and comprehend them at the beginning of the learning process. If the language we are going to learn is English, extra effort is needed. Because in English there are more words than Turkish and many other languages, and even in the United Kingdom native speakers’ vocabulary is limited. However, since no one expects you to speak “native”, having the vocabulary to express yourself is the key to speaking a language fluently and reading and writing at a good level. At this stage, you can refer to the methods of vocabulary memorization methods that we have prepared for you based on English.
We all use some of our belongings often in daily life; we even have to use some. So how can we turn this into an opportunity when learning languages? In this regard, post-its, which we attach our notes between books or notebooks become our helper. Write the words that get stuck in your mind and cannot recall the meaning even though you have looked it up many times on your colored post-it. You can stick these post-its on the bulb switches you have to turn on every day, on the fridge lid where you want a snack when you’re hungry, or on the edge of your laptop when you’re watching series. Write down the words, think about which ones you forget during the day, and make sure you see those words at least five times a day. Remember that visual memory precedes memorization in language learning.
Language is a field that needs to be learned interactively in order to be successful in the implementation phase. You can express yourself very well in writing, but you may not remember the words when you speak. Especially apps like Memrise and Duolingo give you words according to your level and quizzes about them as you go back to the beginning. After a while, unintentionally, the words stick in your mind and they exist in your vocabulary, which you can also use in your daily conversations. The fact that these apps have a conversation section with local people, they will ask you to translate and the words will get even more difficult as your level increases. Through all these exercises, you won’t feel the “what did that mean” question in a real conversation. In addition, these applications prepare you for many words that you may encounter in daily life, from self-promotion to fruits and vegetables, from household items to business terms.
Reading Books in English
Because of access to books in English or other languages is limited, you may face difficulty to find resources when you go to the library or bookstore. But one of the great blessings of living in the age of technology is that we have online books and PDFs. There is nothing more beautiful than being able to read the books you choose in genres that suit your tastes in its native language. After you start and proceed through the book, you will begin to wonder about the course of the subject, but you do not know the meaning of some words. Maybe a word has passed in the book at least 10 times and you need to know what that word means to understand the course of events. Rest assured, this way even from a short 50-page book you’ll have at least 30 words committed into your memory.
Singing / Listening to Music
We all have a few English songs on our Spotify list, and sometimes we want to sing them loudly in front of the mirror. However, in order to sing these songs, first we need to understand what it says and then we need to know its Turkish meaning. So it’s a fact that many of us search the lyrics on Google. Sometimes, there are many unfamiliar words in the lyrics and we have to read the translation. Because to feel the music you have to understand it more or less, right? In addition, listening to music allows your perception of hearing to comprehend the pronunciation of words and to remeber it when you face the word again over time. When you love a song, you listen or sing it at least ten times; it allows you to repeat the same words over and over again and memorise it because it also means something to you.
Thumb Through Dictionary
Besides Post-its, another way to strengthen your visual memory is thumbing through a dictionary. We hear some of you saying “Why do we need it while we have an online dictionary?” ; well, dictionaries are widely used in the vocabulary learning process although it is a traditional method. As you skim and scan through the pages, many words go into your brain and when you see them again at a different context, you remeber it. You are looking for a word, too tired, and the leaves of the dictionary are worn out. If you have no intention on giving up we suggest you put a dot next to the word you’re looking at. To check a word from the dictionary is to save the moment, but to add a point next to it at every turn is to dwell on this word. In fact, when you put the third point next to that word, you will start hating the word as it is hard to get it out of your mind now.
Watching TV Series / Movies
Compared to the old times, series and movies have become more common in our daily lives thanks to some platforms. Action, comedy, drama… All you have to do is choose the type of movie you want and watch it in subtitles in the first place. But conversations may be too fast for you, you may not know two words in a sentence and you may be confusing their meaning in the subtext. At this stage, platforms such as “Ororo,” where you can choose to both learn the language and watch movies, offer you more than just entertainment. In Ororo, an English film shows the meaning of the word above when you click with the mouse cursor on the words that you don’t know the meaning of while you are watching it with subtitles in the same language. You can save this word in “word memory” if you want, and then look up again.
