How do I speak English confidently and fluently?
There are many ways to improve your English to the level you can speak fluently with confidence.
1. Make mistakes
The biggest issue with most people learning English is thinking about what the person across from them will think when they are speaking. Am I saying this wrong? What will they think? Will they understand what I’m trying to say? I hope I don’t sound like I don’t know what I’m talking about. All of these thoughts will hurt you when learning and speaking a new language.
What’s the trick? Do not care about the mistake you may be making. It doesn’t matter if you make mistakes while you speak because you inevitably will make many errors. By knowing this, you should forget about negative consequences that will possibly happen when you are trying to speak a new language. The best thing to do is put your ego aside and just talk. Use everything in your English speaking arsenal when speaking to get practice. Even if you do say something wrong, the worst thing that will happen is that you will be corrected. And that will lead to you learning more. Mistakes are good! In this stage of your learning, the best thing to do is to talk and to make mistakes as you go along because those make the best lessons. You will learn from your mistakes and get better with every conversation.
2. Practise, practise, and more practice
The best thing you can do is take what you know and repeat as much as possible. Whether you are by yourself speaking in front of the mirror, writing letters and texting your friends, or on your way to anywhere, you should practice. Introduce yourself to random people you don’t know and see where your skills will take you. Teach other people what you already know. As long as you are repeating and practising what you know, you will be sure of yourself and your skills will sharpen with every conversation and repetition.
Just like any sport or skill, as long as you are doing something everyday, you will improve. It is always better to practice little by little everyday as opposed to practicing one day per week for several hours at a time. The best way to practice would be for atleast 30 minutes per day for 5-7 days a week. When there is continuity, you will be more confident because the last time you spoke was only 24 hours ago.
3. Discipline = Freedom!
By following the two simple steps that are listed above, you will gain the confidence and fluency you desire with your English speaking skills. The biggest factor that will contribute to your success is your discipline. Speaking English is a skill and it is a skill like any other. With practice and progress through failure, you will make huge improvements, but this practice must happen everyday. Yes, you may not always want to speak English, but what is better? Comfort in doing whatever you want whenever you want and not reaching your goals? Or forcing yourself just a little bit everyday and improving yourself? The best of the best in sports, academia, and in business have one thing that makes them all champions and that is discipline. They make themselves practice everyday because they know that in the long run, they will improve greatly. The point here is to not think about the discomfort of right now, but to think of the benefits you will gain in one month, 6 months, a year. Not a lot can change in a couple weeks, but you would be suprised at the leaps and bounds you will make after 6 months to a year. Discipline will set you free and without it, progress just isn’t likely. Ask anyone you know that is successful and they will tell you that discipline is the key.
